His consort Mata Parvati is Shakti (Cosmic energy) the divine cosmic energy which prevails everywhere and is infinite. Today, the scientists who have gone deeper into the matter, also have discovered that everything is pure energy. Nothing is static. To the gross eyes much looks static. Deep inside every thing is constantly moving.

Lord Shiva is mostly sat immersed in deep meditation in a solitary place. Some times He comes and visit His residential place. Ma Parvati spends the days with her female server. Once it happened that while Ma Parvati was taking a bath in pool, Lord Siva visited the house unexpectedly. Ma Parvati, did not like this. As lord Shiva's arrival is always unexpected, she began thinking of something to avoid this situation to happen again.

Creation of Lord Ganesha from mud

The mother of universe, she made a male doll out of scented mud. She than breath in the consciousness and life in it. The baby endowed with super powers, was named Ganesha. The little boy was thus the child of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati.

Feud between Lord Shiva and Ganesha

Mother divine use to ask Ganesha to guard the doors of house whenever she took bath. On on such instance Lord Shiva was seen approaching the doors by the boy Ganesha. Both the father and the son were unaware of their father-son relations as they were seeing each other for the first time. The faithful son of Maa Parvati stopped the intruder right at the door. The father was upset to see some kid stopping him to enter His own home.

After a few exchanging of dialogues Lord Shiva decided to get rid of the child with force. He gave this job to his warrior servants. They were no match with Lord Ganesha endowed with immense powers. Seeing this enraged Shiva. Realizing this was no ordinary kid stopping Him from entering his own house, he took up the fight. In rage, He cut off the head of the kid Ganesha, from his body.

When Maa Parvati came to know about this, she was grief stricken, at the loss of her son. In rage she decided to inflict destruction in entire universe. The angels (deva) and other different forms of God got very concerned over this idea of cosmic destruction. They rushed to Lord Shiva and with folded hands requested Him to do something, and pacify Mother Parvati's rage.

Lord Ganesha gets the head of an Elephant.

Lord Shiva asked his servants to move towards north and bring the head of first living being they find. Accordingly, head of an elephant was brought by the servants. The head was then put on the body of Ganesha and was resurrected.

Ma Parvati was still not happy, the looks of Ganpati, elephant head on the human body, might not be liked by people. Lord Shiva gave a boon to Ganesha that Ganesha would be worshiped before any religious ritual or new undertaking. Ganesha will be most popular due to his boon for removing obstacles.

Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the most popular festivals in India. Popularly known as Ganesh Utsav (Utsav means celebrations) This festival dedicated to Lord Ganesh, the God of Wisdom. Known as Vighnaharta (vighna means obstacle and harta means removing), the one who removes obstacles. The giver of Riddhi ( means prosperity) and Siddhi (Spiritual powers).

This festival attracts people of India from all caste and creeds. All over India in big cities, small cities to urban villages. Huge and small pandals (stage) are erected. Devotees bring the colorful idols of variant sizes with music dance, singing the songs of Ganesha. On the day of Ganesh Chaturthi (this year 2011 date is 1st September, Thursday) lord Ganpati is then placed in the colorful, decorated pandals.

Rough translation of Navratri Significance in English is written below.

It is the festival of consciousness. For nine days and nights, The first 3 days are dedicated to Tamogun (Tamas) (28th, 29th and 30th of September 2011), Next 3 days to Sattvagun (Sattva) (30th September and 1st and 2nd October 2011) and last 3 days to Rajogun (Rajas)
Durga – Laxmi – Saraswati are 3 forms of Navratri goddesses, beloved known as Maa (Mother). What is Maa? How does She look? Is Maa sitting somewhere high up in the heavens?

No, no Ya devi sarva bhutesu. In all living creatures, that which exists as consciousness. So observing the different forms of the consciousness that prevails everywhere is significance of this festival.

Just as a baby stays in the womb for 9 months, we direct our consciousness or awareness within us, in meditation, is the significance of Navratri. So we move inwards for 9 days and then when we move our consciousness outward we are ready for the creative works.

After the nine days is Dushera (Dushera date 3rd October 2011). On this day we celebrate victory. That which is beyond the three gunas (characteristics), the absolute divine. We celebrate the victory over 3 (gunas) characteristics of our inner consciousness with the help of 3 Goddesses (Divine Mothers).

Kam (lust), Krodh (anger) Mad (pride), Moha (delusion), these forms of demons (Rakhsahas) are won over. The victory is celebrated on Dushera.

So, in day to day living the mind is entangled, to move the mind from entanglements and put it on to polishing of ideals and intensions of life. In a sense we recharge our inner battery. Each human, who is tired of work and entanglements collected over the year. Goes through the process of cleansing of the body, mind and spirits. In this manner it is a festival of getting cleansed and awakening the sacredness within.

This mantra is repeated 108 times. Or 18, 36, 54 ... 108 times since then, depends on how long you practice it. Sometimes it 'for days on end and then can' get to 3000 times. The whole tour and 'always 108, then go' and repeated what 'necessary.

thick forest-like locks of hair, and on the neck, where the lofty snake
is hanging garland, and the Damaru drum making the sound of
Damat Damat Damat Damat, Lord Siva did the auspicious dance of
Tandava and may He shower prosperity on us all.

I have a very deep interest in Lord Siva, whose head is glorified by
the rows of moving waves of the celestial river Ganga, agitating in
the deep well of his hair-locks, and who has the brilliant fire flaming
on the surface of his forehead, and who has the crescent moon as a
jewel on his head.

May my mind seek happiness in the Lord Siva, in whose mind all the
living beings of the glorious universe exist, who is the sportive
companion of Parvati (daughter of the mountain king), who controls
invincible hardships with the flow of his compassionate look, who is
all-pervasive (the directions are his clothes).

May I seek wonderful pleasure in Lord Siva, who is supporter
of all life, who with his creeping snake with reddish brown hood and

Hi, you made me understand the real meaning of stotram like guru dhakishina murthy. Just that subtle in English does go fast, try changing the background of eng subtitles and can it be made to run slower than bfore .....just a thought ...... :-).

I agree that English subtitles are going too fast.. but that's because text is long and soft is fast one... I tried, but could not make it slower than that.

it's a mix of tandav. Basicly tandav is based on drum-beats and some classical instruments, here we have all these things but with a light western touch.

This is Tandav Stotra and not pop dance, why the tune is so western. It should be sung in devotional yet in aggressive style as it depicts the Lord Shiva in His most active style. This is not proper.

LoL this was sung by Ravan when his arms where under the himalaya parwast, so i guess he shouldn't be aggressive and arrogant in that moment so this is the right way to perform this outstanding stotram.

the lyrics are the shiv tandav strotram. Sung by devotee dmon king raavan when he went to kailasa mountain to uproot it from the base. Lord shiva was sitting on kailasa mountain. Raavana lifted the mountain but Lord shiva pressed his toe against the mountain and raavan s hand were crushed under mountain kailasa. So at this moment he creatd shiv tandav strotam that pleased Lord shiva.

Exactly! Shiva Tandava Stotra is not meant to be sung in a particular way! Its the devotion that matters not the tune in which it is sung. Evidently by the comment ratings, youtubers like this. There is no point in clinging rigidly to an old concept. People should be free to appreciate the divine in any way they want, old or new.

I agree with karthikonly; people are free to worship however they desire, as long as they worship.

Also, understand that true peace does not come from listening to peaceful sounds. Even if a room is silent, one can still burn with anger, lust, or any of a host of other demons.

"Even by remaining silent, inner silence is not obtained".

Besides, the actual lyrics of the stotram are hardly peaceful or tranquil. They're quite energized, actually. It about a vigorous dance, anyway.

Here is an interesting story about this song, on the night before his birthday, Gandhiji from Delhi called MS at Chennai and requested that this Meera bhajan be recorded by her and sent to him for his birthday next day.She composed the song overnight and sent it to Delhi by first flight next morning, which he enjoyed very much.Later when Gandhiji was killed, MS heard this song on radio and fainted. She could not get herself to sing this for a long time.

This actually is the poem creted by Meera.And Meera was from Rajashthan. The local language she had used in the poem. Meera used this word "Harinkashapa" in her local language, instead "Hiranakashapa" . And MSS is just singing those wording only. So, of course, she will sing what Meera wrote. Thank u.

Meera's bhajan's broke the dam for me and I started appreciating bhakti ras. In this one Vani Jairam is really superb as was Lata in the other one from "Jhanak Jhanak Payal..." movie. For some reason, Hema Malini comes out so flat in this one in her acting. Just does not convey Meerabai's anguish and ethos.

i think vani is quite appropriate as the singer for this movie 'cause hema has a south accent too. it creates a good harmony. i think hema just fits meera's role. she has a purity about her; i think that is required for a devotional role.

Yes. The song featured on this youtube page is by Vani Jairam composed by Ravi Shankar. This is the song 'jo tum todo PIYA, main nahi todun" by Mira Bai. The one cgdakshata was referring to was a song written by poet Raidasa with the words "jo tum toro RAM, main nahi torun." Different lyrics within the song. Lakshmi Shanar sang this song twice. Once in the album version in 1979 and the other in a concert version. :-)
